Are microgreens and sprouts the same thing?
Nope. Both microgreens and sprouts are baby versions of their adult counterpart, but that’s just about where the similarities end. Let’s delve a little deeper:
- VEGETABLE SPROUTS are typically grown without a medium by being shoved into a jar of water and rinsed often. Through this method, you will typically see a harvest in 3-5 days; from there, you do not allow leaf development, and instead, you eat the roots’ stems.
- This method can lead to contamination issues like E. coli if constant care is not provided to the sprouts.
- MICROGREENS are grown by spreading out seeds over a medium, including (but not limited to) soil, coconut coir, jute, hemp, etc.
- At First Leaf Farm, we prefer soilless methods like jute or coconut coir.
- Microgreens are typically grown between 10-21 days, depending on the variety
- With microgreens, allow for the first leaf development, and then to eat them, you harvest just above the seed.
- Consume the stem and leaf of a microgreen (just a fun little tidbit - microgreens are widely considered a safer and more flavorful alternative to sprouts).
Do you ship your microgreens?
We only sell living microgreens, and as such, we do not ship them. We have not found a reliable way to ship our product and also be able to guarantee freshness.
Do you deliver your microgreens?
Yes. There is a minimum order requirement; currently, we only deliver our microgreens within Pinellas and Hillsborough counties in Florida.
How soon can I get my microgreens?
We are usually at the Saturday Morning Market each Saturday from 9:00 to 2:00 with a wide variety of tasty microgreens to choose from. We also gladly grow to order and will deliver them with a minimum order and as long as you are in Pinellas or Hillsborough Counties. If we grow to order, it is usually 10-14 days to deliver depending on the variety.
Do you sell microgreen seeds?
Currently, we do not resell seeds.
